Wife and I headed home from Spokane after a week of visiting family. Wife wanted to pick up some fruit, so we went home via Yakima and White Pass... my suggestion, because I wanted to stop by Dog Lake for a bit of fishing on the way. Used to stop at the lake many years ago on the way to deer and elk hunting grounds, to pick up some fresh trout for the camp. Arrived at the lake about 1:30, sun high in the sky, not much hope for good fishing. Air temp was 75 degrees, water temp at the shoreline was 68 degrees. Fished one rod, with fl. orange Power Eggs and a 5' leader. Ten minutes in, whammm.. rod tip doubled over and fish on... reeled in a beautiful, feisty 12 1/2" Rainbow. Over the next two hours, tried a variety of baits, then, about 2:30, had a hit on chartreuse PE... Surprise!!!... reeled in a beautiful 11" Brookie... can't remember catching one since my alpine lakes days, thirty years ago.
About 3:00, we were treated to an unexpected thrill as two fighter jets (F115's or F116's??) roared up the Tieton River valley, took a sharp right turn at the top and screamed across the lake at no more than 150' above us (eat your heart out, Blue Angels!!!). Shortly after, two fishermen brought their boat in at the launch, had two Rainbows, one a magnificent fish of 20+". Headed home at 3:30, with two trout for dinner and lots of great memories. PTL!
