With the recent rains, cooler weather and the beginning of Fall, thought I would give Rainbow fishing a try at Silver Lake. Been a while since I had the smoker fired up, and some good smoked trout sounded mighty appealing! Arrived at the lake about 6:45 AM, made my way to the pier and had lines in the water by 7:15. Temp at the outset was 61 degrees, cloudy and fog, persistent breeze out of the north. Water temp was 68 degrees off the pier at 15'. Started out with chartreuse Power Eggs and 4 1/2' leader on one rig, fl. orange PE and 3' leader on the other. Started out slow, didn't have my first hit 'til about 9:00, no hook-up on that one. About 9:30, rod tip began to do that "Rainbow boogie", and reeled in a feisty 13" Rainbow (chartreuse PE). Twenty minutes later, another on the chartreuse... lengthened the leader on the fl. orange... by 11:00 the sun had risen high and burnt off most of the cloud cover, took a while to get my last. Not "red-hot" fishing, but had my limit a bit before noon. All fish came on the chartreuse PE, but had several hits on the fl. orange as well. Don't think the color mattered as much as the longer leader. Still lots of water plants in the lake. All fish were in the 12" to 13" range and were healthy, feisty Rainbows, but not very chunky. Would suppose they will be of a feeding rampage soon, to fatten up for Winter.
Saw perhaps a dozen other fishermen come and go while I was at the lake. Saw three other Rainbows caught, as well as a good number of perch for those fishing with worms. PTL!
