Headed back to Green Lake with my wife to see if we could find some of the stocked rainbows. We purposefully spent the entire time casting lures rather than using bait. Up until today I had primarily used Rooster Tails when spinner fishing for trout, but the night before I had picked up my first Mepps Aglia and Panther Martin spinners and was therefore eager to try to get a fish on each one. Call me crazy, but I always enjoy catching fish using new techniques and or new gear; expanding the arsenal.
On to the fishing. The weather was rainy the entire afternoon, but at wasn't too windy until around dusk. We started our serious fishing at about 3pm under the trees by the rowing stands in the south west corner. My wife tried Rooster Tails in black/silver and gold/rainbow trout pattern, while I used my new size 1 Silver Bladed Mepps Aglia with a gold body. I got one small LMB with that lure. At least I was now 1/2 on getting the new lures to work. I eventually switched my wife over to an 1/8oz silver and blue Kastmaster and then we moved onto the docks by the rowing stands. I believe that my wife got one LMB at this spot with the Kastmaster, while I got another LMB using an 1/8oz gold and crimson Kastmaster. I also had one other LMB on plus numerous hits at that dock with the Kastmaster before moving on. I also switched to my new Panther Martin at that dock, a size 4 with a gold blade and yellow/black body, but didn't get any hits. We then moved to the 65th st. area. I fished the dock while my wife fished the shoreline ledge a few yards away. I hadn't made more than five casts at the dock before I got my first fish with the Panther Martin, another LMB. I was now 2/2 on my new lures and was content, even though I still hadn't found the trout I was after. At the dock I proceeded to bring in a total of 7 LMBs (all released) on the Panther Martin, and noticed that the slower retrieves almost always seemed to draw strikes, rather than a faster retrieve. Another thing I noticed was that it was much easier to retrieve the Panther Martin slowly with the blade still kicking, as opposed to the Mepps Aglia. I think that is mainly due to the difference between the French blade on the Aglia vs the Panther Martin shaft through blade design.
Anyway, I eventually went over to join my wife at the ledge and upon my arrival I saw her looking into the water with her pole bent over. Her first words were, "can I keep it?" but by that point I already figured she had a fish on. Turned out to be a nice fin clipped Rainbow at about 13.5". I then switched to a 1/8oz silver and green Kastmaster and got a hit pretty quick but it didn't stick. That one definitely didn't feel like another dink LMB, but a trout. My wife then brought in another trout of about 11" with the silver and blue Kastmaster, while I switched to a 1/4oz solid silver Kastmaster. I got nothing with that lure, and by this point it was getting pretty dark so we called it a day.
