Wanted to get my wife, Boni, out fishing before the end of the year. Been a tough year for her, physically, and a rain-less day... first day of November... she feeling acceptably well... This was the day! Got to the lake about 7:30 AM, lines in the water about 7:45. Lots of other fishermen on the east shoreline already. Temp was 48 degrees at the outset, brisk wind from the north. Water temp at 57 degrees at the shoreline. Began with fl. orange Power Eggs on all three rods, leaders from 3' to 4'. Boni landed the first fish, about 8:15, then another ten minutes later. I got into the action next, then the bite definitely slowed. We went another hour before Boni caught another... tried different colored PE, different leader lengths, began to spin-cast various spinners and spoons... had one fish on briefly on a Panther Martin spinner with a fl. orange blade. Began to get hits on chartreuse/green PE. Action was pretty consistent... Boni out-fished this old man, she caught 8 while I managed 4. We left the lake a bit after 1:00 with 12 fish between us. Six of the Rainbows were 13" to 14", while six others were from 11" to 12". Today, chartreuse/ green out-fished the fl. orange PE.
Lots of other fishermen/women at the lake today. Saw a good number of fish caught... albeit, sporadically. Not the "hot" fishing of earlier in the week. May have had something to do with the rowing shells on the water... races being conducted today and the surface of the lake was in constant motion from the motorboats and the rowing shells all morning long.
Upon cleaning the fish, I began to see the familiar green "cream of wheat" like stuff the fish feed on all Fall and Winter. Am no Marine Biologist or Botanist, but I believe the stuff is the seeds or spores of underwater plants, which creates a phytoplankton in the water which the fish gorge themselves on. This is why the chartreuse/green PE becomes more effective. Have included a pic of the stomach contents of a couple of the trout.
Had a wonderful day at the lake with my wife. Caught some beautiful fish and enjoyed watching the shell races... had a nice conversation with the father of one of the crew members who had come to the lake to watch his son race. A day full of joy! PTL!
