Now that elk season is over it was time to get back to fishing and to break in the new sonar units I installed on the boat. (Lowrance elite 5 HDI on on the bow and one on the console).
I actually went out Sun. Only had a couple hours and thought I would take my 6 year old son out to catch some perch before his football game. The new sonars were awesome. We easily located big schools of perch in 35-40 ft. We threw all sorts of jigs and tubes and grubs. Lots of nibbles but could not hook up with anything. Two hours and nothing. Headed off to his game with the bad taste of skunk in my mouth. Was determined to not be beat.
Wife and I headed back on Mon. This time armed with night crawlers. Found big schools again in the same areas and depth range. Very slow at first but this time I had time on my side. About noon the bite turned on and we began to haul them in one after another. Bite was light had the really let them have it for a few seconds. They were all lip hooked and not really eating it. We waded through lots of little ones to bring home about 20 in the 8-12" range. I experimented between the night crawlers and jigs. Could only get the on the night crawlers.
A bit windy but typical for American which made staying on top of the school a challenge but with the chart plotter on the sonar it was a lot easier. Amazing GPS accuracy with these units without an external antenna. Had us a fish fry for dinner and although my son was sad we got skunked on Sun. He had a happy full belly of perch on Mon.
