Had to get out on the water was having withdrawals. Been itching to head to Lake Washington and try the big water. I now know why it took me so long to actually drive up there from Puyallup. TRAFFIC!! waited till about 0900 hoping the morning rush would have died down. Was good all the way to the 167/405 interchange took 30 min to drive 2 mi. Guess my nest trip up there will have to be a weekend. anyways it was a cold clear morning with snow and ice still on the ground when I left. Warmed to about 34 deg. when I launched at Gene Coulon park. beautiful calm sunny day I only saw two other boats all day a sail boat and another power boat just passing by.

Fished several various points and humps that I marked fish on in the 30-40 ft depth. Tried a dropshot with various different baits. tried throwing a football jig with different plastics on it and even tried a Rev rig. I had 4 good hookups 3 on the dropshot and one on the Rev rig. These were solid fish that were of substantial size which was apparent after the hookset and the pole doubles over. Very weird thing happened with every fish. Felt the bite, set the hook, kept pressure and started to reel them in but after 5-6 turns of the handle they all came off. I checked my hooks which I knew were sharp because I hit them with the sharpener before I started. Never had this happen like this 4 in a row so I'm not sure if they were just grabbing it an letting go after they felt the pressure but I know I set the hook good given the amount of line I had out. Very puzzling and frustrating on what could have been a great day of winter fishing. Had to give it at least a 2 because the action was at least fun and heart pounding for the few seconds of fight each fish gave. I don't even know if they were smallies or not.

already thinking about the next trip.

At least you had the bites. As we say: "Next time"... :-)

Or you can beat traffic by going in earlier. I work at 6 am and usually make it to Seattle from Everett just under 30 minutr

What setup were you using on the dropshot? Rod, line, hook, hook size, and drag pressure?.... Shouldn't lose that many fish like that on a dropshot. Maybe we can help you figure it out

I had 8lb floro leader with 20lb Sufix 832 main line. with a 1/0 dropshot hook (Gamakatsu). Used a 4" roboworm and another similar worm also used a 3" senko style plastic wacky style and a 3" baby bass assassin. using a 6'6" med action spinning rod. drag is not too tight its loose enough for a large fish to take some drag without breaking the line but tight enough that I was not loosing any line with the hook set.

1/0 hook sounds way big for those baits. I use a #4 and sometimes #2 for 3" worms, nose hooked and wacky hooked.

What kind of hook set are you imparting? Side pull, or vertical pull?

Braid main line? Floro main line? Mono main line? I don't know what Sufix 832 is. 20 lb floro and mono is WAY big and will most likely have a big bow in it, thus a bad hook set/penetration. I use 10lb Tuff Line HeviCore sinking braid with 6 lb floro leader of about 3' to 6' length.

My other dropshot rod has 5lb Sun Line floro. No braid.

sorry the Sufix is a braid. with the dropshot I pull straight up with just a steady pressure.

Sounds like you're doing a lot of things correct. I would tighten up your drag pressure, and then lessen it while playing the fish. You want to use the smallest hook you can get away with when fishing deep. Opt for a #4 Gammy when using the smaller worms. You should step up to a #1 when wacky rigging 3" senkos. I use nanofill to a 4 or 5lb leader. Gamma touch, Or Sunline are my preferences. I Use a slim beauty knot for joining the two "it's really knotless". I've never had the knot break while playing a fish. Always much sure your hook is upright. I always run my tag line back through the eye of the hook. Marc Marcantanio has some videos somewhere "YouTube???" Demonstrating this. Sounds like your on the right path!

Oh ya, what weight are you using at that depth? Length of leader/dropper from worm down to the weight?

3/8 with about 10" of leader

drop shot sand shrimp or coon stripe around structure , you will be supprised what you catch in WAWA even in winter!
