After exchanging a few PMs with a fellow walakes member, he graciously invited me to join him in his boat for a morning of fishing. I had been out on Angle Lake before, but without success. I hoped to meet a new friend and pick up a tip or two. We both arrived just before the gates opened at 8 to get an early start. I started trolling a red wedding ring with a gold smiley blade. My partner was fishing a clown pattern needlefish. The needlefish was outfishing the wedding ring, so I switched over to a perch pattern needlefish tipped with a piece of worm. We had some success with trolling, but when the finder showed a concentration of fish, we would stop for awhile to still fish on the bottom. My partner used a gulp natural color worm, and I used a nightcrawler, and ended up adding some gel scent to the worm. The fish were mostly toward the northern shore and in deeper water. I think we caught about the same number of fish trolling as we did still fishing. So, other than the bail coming loose on one of my reels and then getting distracted watching an osprey while my line tangled in the trolling motor, it was a good day. My partner caught his limit nine for me. It turns out my presentations previously had been just a bit larger than desired. Lighter line, no dodger, no weight, smaller lure. Sometimes simpler is better.
