Had a great day out. Fished the south end of Mercer Island and the west bank from the mouth of the Cedar river and headed north about a mile. Strangely we picked up a Whitefish while trolling for Cutties!( Super boney, wouldn't recommend eating). Fished for another 2 hrs and picked up two nice Cutties. Threw back a couple small Kokanee. I will revisit them later this season. :-) We were trolling at 1 - 1.5 mph, between 10' and 24' deep on downriggers. Using a 5" dodger with a UV wedding ring dressed with an orange smile blade, pink shopeg corn, and Anise sent oil. Been having some good luck with this setup lately. Looking forward to Kokanee season! Im in a 16' lund, red in color. Give a shout next time you're out, I usually fish Sat. or Sun. mornings around the south end of Mercer Island. Cheers!

That is a pikeminnow also known as squawfish. They eat salmon fry and on the columbia they pay anglers money for each one they catch. Whitefish are a salmonoid and would of had an adipose fin like trout and salmon if it was a whitefish, which by the looks it definitely isn't. Whitefish are good smoked and the caviar is supposed to be good but couldn't tell you since I dont eat caviar.

Thanks Riverhunter. I asked a guy at the dock who said it was a whitefish. It was fun to catch anyway. Didn't put up any fight. I made fish tacos with it. Tasted ok, just a pain to pick through all of the bones. Wont be keeping any more, unless its recommended to help the salmon runs?

Sorry man, those question marks were supposed to be yucky face emoticons.
Not sure why they turned into question marks.

Thanks for the report on lake WA.

Not sure how they affect salmon on lake wa but wdfw doesn't want to many roaming around the Columbia. I personally don't keep anything I don't intend to take home so glad you made a meal out if him. Any fish can taste good, all comes down to the chef and preparation!!

I can confirm, That's definitely not a whitefish, no adipose fin. I catch a lot of mountain white fish. Weird thing is, after you catch a white fish and they die, they smell exact like fresh cucumbers.

That's a Pikeminnow... I kill everyone I catch. No min size and no daily limit. Smolt eating machines and they breed like rabbits. Nice cutties though! Look for me out the in a green Customweld

FYI - check the consumption advisory in the rules pamphlet for lake Washington. You'll find carp and pikeminnow (squawfish) both listed as do not eat. Cutts on the other hand are listed as one meal per month. The lake has a legacy PCB contamination issue and some species hold on to them more so than others.

G-Man,
I looked it up last night. It says DO NOT EAT for pregnant women and children. (Unless I missed something). I guess it doesn't matter because I will not be eating them in the future.

Cobrar543, you don't really eat dog fish do you? I've never tried it so I don't really have a viewpoint, but I've been told to stay away.

Actually, for Lake Washington it is do not eat for all groups. Statewide it is as you mentioned.

Hey Reeldeal, think I've seen you out there trolling~ nice cutts and yes, keep and kill all squawfish you catch out of there and what I do is cut them into chucks and freeze them for Lake Chelan lake mackinaw (lake trout) bait!

Nicely done Reeldeal. Yeah, those pikeminnows are a dime a dozen in the slough and are always a bycatch trolling or fishing for bass.
Speaking of bass, dropshotting for them works well this time of the year around the South East end of the island and at Coleman Point in the 30 to 50 foot depth. Just look for bait in that range. There's a video here Mike put out a few years back will give you additional info. I might be heading out to the lake Saturday so I might see you out there too.
Tight lines.

Nice fish. And you're probably the first person I've ever heard of eating a squawfish lol. I never understood people who kill any that they catch. It's no ones duty to control their population and I haven't heard of them actually causing a big enough issue to where it would be needed. To each his own though.

quote : Any recommendations for bass fishing

answer : KILL ALL squawfish you catch. That also helps the other species of fish in the lakes and rivers. All helps the Eagles as they will eat the dead squawfish. :-)
