My brother-in-law Paul and I fished Palmer Lake in Okanagon County for kokanee with Jerrod & Tom Gibbons and "Stump" of Okanagon Valley Guide Service. We had an outstanding day! We fished with Moneymaker Fishing kokanee set-ups and liberal amounts of Super Dipping Sauce. We started the day early, at first light. I stayed in Oroville which was about a half hour from the launch. Palmer Lake is located in the Many Lakes Rec Area managed by the BLM - meaning we all get to enjoy this lake.
Weather was ideal, low 60's and sunny. Really cool, idyllic location. I saw maybe 6 or 7 other boats fishing all day. I consider this light pressure, especially for this productive a fishery.
We trolled Jerrod's Moneymaker gear at depths varying from top water to 25 feet deep. Of interest was even trolling through murky colored water we still had great action, which I think was due to the scent bombs that Jerrod and his dad have designed and patented.
We got into over 40 fish, and put 25 in the boat for the five of us fishing. Limits all. The fish were feisty, and jumped around a bit. The slightest lack of tension was looking for trouble and often resulted in a lost fish. Fish averaged 12-14 inches with a few healthier. Very firm meat, and bright red.
Jerrod and team were great, knowledgeable, and fun to fish with! I'm certain on my own I would've needed more time to fill the boat.
I was informed that the state record for Burbot was taken in Palmer Lake. My only regret of the trip is we didn’t have time for more fishing and I didn't get to try for a Burbot!
