I took a scouting trip over to Omak Lake to see if the fish are in around the shoreline at Beer Can Beach, this trip I sometimes make prior to my annual Omak Lake trip each spring. I got to the lake about 11:00 AM, sunny with a light breeze must of been close to 60. My first offering was a Daredevil lure in frog 3/8th. About 15 cast in I caught Hen about 18", she was full of fight and had spawning colors. No more action for a while as I tried various spinners in my Omak Lake arsenal. After covering quite a bit of shoreline I hooked into and landed another 18" spawner that again fought like the devil, doing the death roll the whole time I tried to release her. She was released unharmed and swam away into the depth's. At this time I went back to the motel for a break as my plan was to fish the evening bite till dark. After a mini sightseeing trip I arrived back at the lake about 5:00 PM. I again casted my frog Daredevil and within 10 cast landed a beauty 20" that was bright and green. I then had a dry spell and decided it was time to break out my fly presentation which is a simple set of a short haired woolly bugger(olive) with a large corky as a strike indicator and about 5' of fluorocarbon leader cast out with conventional "gear chucker" rod and spinning reel. This yielded immediate results; I caught and landed 5 fish in about 15 minutes. the largest was 28" and was an easy 6lb fish. All of these fish fought very hard and it was great fun. The fly bite died so I went back to my casting setup and walked further down the shoreline where I had another "mad" minute and landed 4 more in about 10 minutes. The last fish of the night was a tiny 16", rather disappointing for trout fishing. I caught 10 fish in about 2-1/2 hours Saturday night, I was very pleased. I stopped by on my way home Sunday and fished the frog lure and caught 4 fish all the same 15 to 16" bright green fish. I have deemed this a successful scouting trip and looking forward to my 4 day trip over there coming up at the end of next week. This is a great fishery if you like to catch big trout! Tight lines to all!
