We were scheduled to go to Hayden and guess what ....my alarm did not go off! Oops my fishing partner for the day called at ten to six and we were supposed to meet at 5:30 am. Not good as I still had to make coffee and get the boat out of the barn. Switched gears and decided to go to Long lake (Lake Spokane) and fish for the triploid trout.

Had to launch at the confluence ramp (the good ramp at Nine Mile Resort is closed for the winter grrrrrrrrrrr!! Another subject) Water was running FAST and makes launching a task at best. The channel is strangely marked and you have to watch out for stumps and rocks etc. Fast running water is not a place to learn your boating skills or have your motor quit. The good part is the State Parks will open the Nine Mile Resort launch on the 15th of April. Only $7 to launch after you have purchased a Discovery pass....a real deal for sure.

On to the fishing; use your sonar to locate the main river channel and when you see fish top to bottom start fishing! We trolled the same stuff we use in Roosevelt with the Perch Kekeda working the best trolled at 2.5 mph on three colors leaded line in 40 to 80'of water. Other takers were Rapala's and even a Kokanee rig. We caught our ten fish in about three hours; the fishing was steady but not fast.

The return to the dock is really interesting. You have to have on enough power to cross the fast flowing river, come in above the dock and cut the power and let the current push you into the dock.....too much fun. I cut the power a little soon and caught the corner of the dock with the back corner of the boat; ouch!! Got a new battle scar on the old Starcraft. The good part is I don't have that $40k boat to put a mark on.

All in all a great day of fishing; beats working every time - Alan

Very cool. My brother has a neighbor that uses Kekedas at Long as well. He's told me what you just experienced, perch and orange working well on those fish. A lot shorter travel time for you than Hayden, guess there's a bright side to not making the alarm. Nice report.

Thanks Dave, Can't beat those Kekeda flies!
The Nine Mile Resort is only a mile from home and about 5 miles to the confluence. Hayden is 55 miles so it is a bit further. I used to buy the Washington park permit that covered both the Discovery pass and the State Park launch fees. It is a hundred bucks so you have to launch 7 times to cover it. I didn't always get my money's worth so I just buy the Discovery pass and pay the $7 each time I launch. They do have free park days though where you don't need the Discovery pass.

I don't know where you are paying a hundred bucks for a Wa. park permit. I only pay $70 for mime here on the west side at a state park. Nice fish.

18ftTrophy - I stand corrected it's only $80 for the Natural Investment pass. I was thinking I paid $97 for the last one. Here is the link for those who don't know about it:

Seven launches will pay for it and that's pretty easy to do when you live within a mile of the launch. Evening fishing after work is always fun.

The Washington State park ramp at corkscrew canyon has been open for more than a week. I used it on Thursday.

TonyV - Thanks for the update. That's a long ways from my house. The boat is faster if I want to fish the lower lake.

luvfish - I don't use any hardware with the Kekeda flies. I use 18# leaded line with 50 to 60 feet of fluorocarbon leader. I tie on a small swivel and add about 4' of leader and tie the fly on direct. Bring the boat up to speed, bait the fly with worm or whatever you like and check to see the fly is NOT spinning. A very slow roll is OK....maybe. Troll 2 - 2.5 mph, no bites, troll faster. Three colors is my go to depth (12 to 14' ). I even use a pole with a small reel and only three colors on it with 10# Power Pro for backing. Hope that helps - Alan
