Went to deer lake today to try my hand at mack fishing, I have tried a few times before with no success... but not today, brought in a nice 32 inch 10lb mack.! A great time even though we fought the wind in our little boat all day. Also had a couple bows early this morning. Trolled at about 50ft most of the day with no success then moved closer to shore trolled in the 20ft range with a 2 piece rainbow colored rapala and that's where the mack hit it kinda surprised me. All in all a good day.

Congrats on the beautiful Laker. May has historically been my best month for Mack's at Deer, so it should really start getting good anytime now. Sometimes you can't buy a bite, but I've also had days where we couldn't get the lines out without getting bit. Do you know what speed you were trolling at?

We were running between 2 and 3 mph wind wouldnt allow me to control speed very well I think its time for a gas motor haha the electric trolling motor is handy but not cutting it at times

Yeah I always run at about 3 mph and people say I'm crazy and that you have to troll super slow for em. Oh well we can keep catching them while they keep doing what they read in a book works. 1.2 - 1.8 mph just doesn't seem to work at Deer for Mackinaw. I also catch them right on top from March til around June. Right on the surface with a rainbow J plug, kwikfish or rapala. They also really like to hit when you're turning too, so I make as many turns as I can, with slight increases and decreases in my speed. I stay close to shore too just like you mentioned. The first two bays (pine bay) & (cedar bay) are my favorite spots. Looks like you got yours in Pine bay. Tight lines, hope you catch another one (or two)
