Two out of three isn't bad. Two of us thought it was a good day fishing. One - a bad dream. We fished 1:45 - 6pm. There were only two other boats on the lake some of the time with us. Sunny and windy the first few hours, water temp 69 and air temp about 55. By late afternoon, the winds calmed and it was beautiful - at least weather-wise.

Should have known the day would be weird because of the way it started. At 11:15am, K & K started out to get the boat and trailer and when we got to the hangar realized we had no keys and couldn't get in. P was going to meet us at the lake at 1:30pm. So rather than drive all the way home for keys and all the way back we decided to just hang out at home and wait another hour and a half and just meet P at the boat and all go to the lake together. Good thing we made that decision as K's keys weren't even back at home. We discovered he'd left them in his jacket pocket last Sunday and locked the jacket in the boat in the hangar (so if we'd gone back home for the missing keys they wouldn't have been there any way!)

Got on the lake at 1:45pm and P and I immediately started catching fish. But poor K. couldn't even get his line in the water. All his poles were tangled up together. No sooner than he'd get a line untangled then he'd get tangled in the boat ropes, or a tackle box, or the shore or a tree. After what seemed an hour and a half he finally wet a line, but then broke his line and we had to fetch his floating lure in the net. (We've all had a day on the water like this, and goodness knows it's a nightmare.) The entire afternoon went this way for K.

Quite a few misses and lots of follows for all of us. I boated 15 fish. 12 bass and 3 trout. (Again, amazing to find bass this early in the year.) P. boated ten fish (5 bass, 5 trout.) K. -? Zero.

At 6pm we left the lake and took the boat back to the hangar. While taking the trailer off the truck ball, a freak accident happened to K. Apparently the boat was backed against the wood chocks too firmly and when he let the trailer off the ball, the boat lurched forward and pinched his hand between the hitch and truck bumper. Next thing there was blood and pain and a huge gaping slice in K's forefinger where it joins the hand palm. Upon further examination, we all flipped when the tendon could be seen! Thank goodness for our wonderful doctor and friend Dave Shinstrom whose dinner we interrupted when we called asking if he could stitch K. up. He met us at the clinic and cleaned up the wound and put nine stitches in K's finger. Thankfully the tendon wasn't severed and with time he should heal just fine.

When the fish gods send you warning signals, heed them.

Considering the population of Orcas it must be seriously nice to share Cascade and Mountain lakes with so few others in the spring and fall. Sooo jealous!

It is super nice and we are very blessed. We help sponsor a lunch for the Friends of Moran State Park each year who help clean up the park to get it ready for each season. It's our way of giving back because we are so grateful to have the lake here.

I've had a few "not so good" days fishing but K tops them all. I did have a triple barb hook lock two hooks into my hand and had to have a doctor cut them out.

Ouch. Two barbs are bad. About five years after fishing at dusk on this same lake I had a big bass throw a huge treble into my hand. It was a brand new large top water lure, so the barbs were nice and sharp! Had to go to the same doctor after hours. Fascinating to watch how he used something similar to dental floss under the barb and yanked it at just the right angle and out it came without meat loss or cutting off the barbs. Sorry you had to go through it, too!
