Been watching Bluegrouse Bill's reports for Deer lake and decided it's time to check it out. Got to the launch and found 6 other trailers at the parking lot. Lake was in a small rolling chop - no whitecaps visible. Top up, ready to drop in, waited for two other groups to come in and load up to leave. Talked to a couple of groups as they were preparing to leave- all complained of very windy conditions with few fish caught. Three groups I spoke with said they were targeting trout. 1 group said they saw bass being caught on the East side. Launching alone when the wind is against you is testy. Lol, went to the truck to pull to a parking space only to return as the boat wound up back on the trailer unassisted. YIKES. Guess securing with a single tie is not advised. Re-launched and secured both the front and back to the dock. ( hope no one video'd this first failed attempt, probably would have been a good You tube funny)
Got launched and set out to throw plastics at docks all over the lake. The wind was making control extremely difficult as I worked from the Southend to the Eastside. Was marking fish everywhere from top water to 25'. This lake has got to be close to full on crazy bite. Made the turn at the East end lily pads and started On the North side just as the Wind quit blowing. 5pm. No fish to this point.
Started pitching rage tail craws , sweet beavers and Senko's and started pulling SMB from 3-5' of water close to shore. Bass seemed to be on their beds, or close to adjacent docks. Caught a few about 4' off the shore. One LMB 15" and spurting eggs- released close to the Resort. The day was trying at the start but ended on a positive note when the wind quit and the shoreline bite improved quickly.
No big fish but, the last 1 1/2 hrs were fun. I think next excursion to this lake will find me starting on the North side just West of The Deer Lake Resort.
Temp on the water varied from 56-60 degrees.

Glad you caught some. For some reason the wind has been crazy out there this year. Another good spot for smallmouth are both points between Pine & Cedar bay & around the Cedar bay point along the steep rock wall heading towards Mackinaw bay(i've heard it called mackinaw point too) & for largemouth the best spot is over around the old Haney's resort. Just start hitting the docks til you find em. Only problem is they're all over til from mid may to mid june then they seem to vanish. Then they get really gard to find & I just chase the smallies. Oh also for largies try the right side of the channel in the bay with the reeds. Maybe I'll see you out there sometime
