So got a call from retired buddy Ron Brown who was going to be fishing the derby this Saturday with his grandson and wanted me to help him learn about fishing for cutts on Lake Wa. I am by no means and expert at this but offered to at least show him some things that work for me and some of the productive areas to troll.
Now it was Tuesday and I am NOT retired so told him I would have to work from his boat and if things got crazy he would have to run me back to the launch so I could get back at it. We met at Coulon at 11am and were heading out to start our troll just south of Mercer island. My goal was to just stick to one thing and that was to learn how to fish herring either cut plug or whole. Just like a pitcher works on one pitch in spring training, this was my opportunity to get it figured out!
Ron stuck with a brads cut plug and soon had one on as we round the tip across from Seward park and towards Paul Allens house~ A nice long cutty so the skunk was off the boat! Now I ran through some different set ups and finally found one I liked and worked best which was a pro-troll alligator clamp which you put the whole herring on. I had tied my own leader trailing with 2 tandem wide gap finesse hooks number 2 and soon had my first drive by that popped the clip. I re-baited and soon had another take down that stuck~ fish on! This one wasn't too big but still fun for me as it was my first on a herring out here in quite a while.
We worked our way up north on the western side of Mercer and soon were heading back across towards Seward park~ I was dragging a mini short bus flasher I picked up at the sportsman show and had huge take down~ fish on! This was a piggy and took me awhile to get into the net but was worth the wait! As the day wore on I got busier and busier with work but was cool as I was able to take of things with my laptop set up on Ron's boat and had one of my better sales days! Gotta love technology!
So not a bad day but gave it a higher rating just due to the fact that I caught 2 fish on herring and my fish finder was working so good thanks to G-man and was able to work from a boat today!
Next it's derby day but I will let Fish Dawg post his report to summarize our day on the water as it was a hoot!!
See you on the water!
