This is my 2nd report. Had a beautiful day out on the water with my wife, 3 children and in-laws. We ended up staying at the state park. The island across from it had Great Blue Heron nests all over. I had no idea they congregate like this. One tree had 10 nests. One boat had an osprey steal a fish as he had it half way to the boat. His lure ripped out of the fish and both sides got what they wanted out of the bargain. I rented a john boat from Black's Beach Resort and took people out in sessions. Everyone caught fish. The bite was hot for one pole early in the morning so I kept that gear on all day. The other pole had very no success, it was like the plague. We lost the bite at 10 am and slowly received a bit or two over the next 4 hours. I ended up moving the second pole to the same exact gear. Then I changed scent from Anise to Garlic. That did the trick. We knocked em dead with the Garlic.
Since there was WAY to much to tell you what didn't work I will just tell you what did work. I should also mention my method of depth control. I use a sliding tube with a swivel in front of my entire rig for adding sinkers. This enables you to feel the bite. If you attach the sinkers directly to any piece of your rig it will make it harder to feel a bite. Anyway I typically use a half ounce to one ounce sinker. If the current/wind ever gets really crazy I might switch to 2 ounces.
Attractor: 4.4" Double D Dodger Pink
Lure: 1.5" Cha Cha squid Pink (silver blade although I really don't notice a difference in blade colour)
Scent: Garlic (although Anise had moderate luck in the middle of the day and stunned in the morning)
Water column: 60 ft of line, 30-40ft depth
Depth: 30-100 ft deep
Direction: North to South and vice versa
Catch: Rainbow Trout 13-15" (30) Large Mouth Bass 8" (2) -----That happened when we got WAY to close to shore ha ha ha
Important: I checked all ranges of the water column and depths on the good gear. It was important to stay in the 30 ft water column, most bites came off trolling shoreline points moving from 50-30ft depth. A point was a guaranteed hit. Every point on the lake yielded a hit.
What was important was my whole family had fun. It was my first time taking my wife and in-laws out on a boat. My wife caught 12 and lost at least 5.
