My 8 yr. old son and I started out at about 06:00 at the State Park boat launch. It is the only decent place I know of with a dock to launch this time of the year with the water level being so low. We headed up to the Crab Creek area and fished for about 1 ½ hours with only one nice smallmouth being caught. So we moved south midway towards the Winchester Wasteway. When we got there the bite was on. We caught a total of 16 walleye with 10 of them being smalleyes. We landed a nice 26” hog and another 22” walleye.
Trolled in 10-25’ of water pulling homemade spinners. The color that was hot for us was orange and white with about 75% of the fish being caught on these colors.
We got off the lake at about 11:00 when all the noisy jet racing boats started tearing up the water, there must have been about 30 of them racing.
The morning entrainment was watching two fishing boats hauling butt across the water too close to the shore line and ended up running aground on the sand bars that are just a few inches below the water. So if you are fishing potholes, make sure you are going slowly when you are within 200 yards of shore or you may find yourself high and dry.
