The boy and I hit up Kitsap Lake today even though I knew it was going to be cold and wet. He hung in there like a trooper. We fish from 10am to 1pm. The conditions looked to be perfect with the Barometer rising with this front, on and off rain, and warmer temperature than the last couple of weeks.
My plan was to bass fish a little and chase the tough winter largemouth. I took most of the time staring at the bottom on the electronics looking for key areas that would be holding big bass. I tossed a pig n jig and drug it slowly while watching the bottom. I also threw a suspended jerk bait and sat on it with long pauses for nothing. Metering a ton of fish I decided to switch up to a mini jig and powerbait for the boy.
In 16ft of water coming down a shelf in one of the coves was when a big fish appeared on the screen tucked up next to some structure. Once his bait passed the spot it went straight bent over. It was tough for him to reel in this monster, but after some patience, two runs underneath the boat, an arial display and a quality fight I was able to get the net under this beast. Great job by the boy I must say.
The entire time I thought he might lose it the way it was running and bending his pole in half. Once we got home it weighed in at 2lbs even. We will be having it for dinner.
This was the only fish of the day but well worth the time spent on the water together and discovery a couple of new spots.
