This past weekend definitely made up for all the times this summer that the fish got the better of me. September 1st was opening day at Davis Lake. Davis is a small lake a few miles above Winthrop. It is selective gear/catch and release most of the year, but it is open for bait fishing on September 1st. Most of the lake shore is private all but a small area by the public boat launch. You can pay $3 per person to fish on the resort property which is what we did. We arrived at the lake Sunday morning with my cousin Anna, her husband Casey and their two kids Makenna (almost 4), Bradon (18 months). We got there about 7:30am and the lake was buzzing. We decided to try fishing off the dock because we thought it would be easier with the kids. Every where you looked people were catching fish! This was a morning of "catching" not fishing. (Have you heard the phrase shooting fish in a barrel? That was us!) We globbed on some Powerbait and the fun began! We all got a limit in a little over an hour! It was quite the event. There were times that three of us had fish on at once! Anna would not take the fish off the hook so I would help her get set up and she would cast out and have a fish on before I rebaited my hook. It was fun! We were catching rainbows that averaged about 12 inches long. Makenna was even catching fish all by herself. If you are a dad with kids or a grandparent with grandkids I would highly recommend trying the lake out one opening weekend. We went back on Monday morning and had the same results. Casey and Anna did try the fish out for dinner and they said they still tasted good. We did send all the fish home with Casey and Anna so they could smoke them.
