I picked up my fishing partner, "Motoboat" from N. Seattle on Friday AM, and made the journey to Omak lake. I have fished the lake plenty of times, and am familiar with it. Although this was my first experience fishing the Spring spawn, when these Lahontans come into the shoreline.
First off, leaving home I had been sick all week. We arrived at "Cowpie" beach around 2:00. If you're not aware there is a complete road closure along Hwy 155, just above Nicholson beach. (I think that was accurrate). Anyway, it is completley jacked up to comutte daily between staying in Omak, and fishing Cowpie.

Started off boating along shoreline in 10-20' of water. Slowly dragging flies, or casting/stripping. Various Woolly Buggers, colors, etc. Leeches, etc. caught a couple fish the first afternoon, but the next day our fishing picked up quite a bit. Fish over the 2 days were mostly around 18". Although Motoboat did land a solid 25" Lahontan that he guestimated at 4-5 lbs.
The next day I spent more time fishing from the float tube, dragging flies along shallows, 15' of water. Best fly was a little imitation bait fish. One fish I caught, rather small, at about 16" had a tail fin sticking out if its mouth.
Of course I had to inspect more closely.. This turned out to be an extremely fresh 6" smolt!
I couldn't believe the predator was only 16" itself.
By the end of the day I think I landed 6-7 fish for the 2 days. Not lights out fishing for sure, but plenty steady I thought.
One lucky guy, his first time there, landed a 30" fish, estimated at 12-14 lbs. i saw the pic. Amazing fish.

Add into this weekend, a dead Minn Kota motor, along with fly line caught up in the prop of gas outboard---drifting down wind near dark. )-: not to mention failed wheel bearings on trailer.. Don't forget about being increasingly sick all weekend, and being evaluated for pneumonia on Monday. All this made for quite an interesting time.
I do love it over there, but man, if you have a break down you are just "boinked". You are miles from anyone, anywhere. No cell reception, etc. check backup motor before leaving home.

Ouch! Rough trip. Glad the fishing helped to offset the bad parts.
