We took the kayak out on Alder Lake to see if the kokanee are biting yet, or if anything else was, for that matter. We paddled all the way to the end of the no-wake arm - about 5 miles and only got 2 small kokanee. At that point we switched to spinners and spoons with soft baits to try for cutthroat, bass and crappie. One lucky cast with a spinner to some downed logs into the water and it was fish on! After working the fish to the kayak and with geojay's help netting it, we boated a nice fat 16" largemouth bass. We didn't have a scale with us, so I'm guessing 2-3 lbs. She was released to spawn and make more future big bass (besides the regulations). While fishing around the stumps and logs along the shore on the way back we didn't see much more action, just a bite here and there. The sounder marked fish in many places, but most were not biting - not on what we had anyway. Back at the boat ramp, we talked to a few other boat fishers, who said they didn't catch much either. But the weather was beautiful, as was the lake and the mountain.

Nice report! I enjoyed hearing about someone catching and releasing a bass at Alder Lake. I tried to catch bass at Alder 2 or 3 times but failed.

We've had the best luck with bass up the no-wake arm. But we're fairly new to bass fishing and, though we saw a couple big ones last year, this is the first time we've caught one over 12" in Alder.
