Back east with the cartopper to do some rowing and meeting up with a few bowling buddies for some camping and fishing...
Since my pals were staying at Conconully, I thought we should try a lake I've wanted to fish for a few years before I headed off to Republic area, nearby Blue Lake off Limebelt Road. Planted annually with brook trout and a few rainbow, it seemed to have some potential, not too many reports.
First, the road!! E-gad! It's all dirt 6 miles to the lake, most of it ok with a few rough patches, but there are three horrific spots, though short, which are deeply rutted and almost impassible with a 2 wheel drive like mine. Getting out and spotting the way through helped. Be careful!!!!
The launch was fine for a small boat, the lake is gorgeous! We found brookies from 12 to 15 inches, nice brookies!! They would not strike trolled/stripped flies at all, save for a few quality rainbows from 14 to 18 inches. The brooks would only hit trolled 1/8th oz brass blade/yellow bodied Rooster Tails. We got bit every ten minutes, hooked approximately 25 fish on ultra light tackle, 6 pound maxima. Weather was perfect! No one there but us all morning. The fish were in all parts of the lake.
The guys left for their cabin at the reservoir very happy, great day. Off to Republic and Long Lake for westslope cutt fly fishing.
