My brother in law called late Friday afternoon and asked if I wanted to go night fishing at Loon with him and my nephew Mike. Sure why not; my boat or Mike's? Decided to take Mikes so there was some fiddle faddle while we got everything together for the first night fish trip of the summer. Got to the "spot" on the south end of the lake by Granite Point and anchored down in 32' of water. Two floating lights on each side of the boat and the gas lantern fired up before it got totally dark. Baited up with anise/krill corn I used two weeks before at Roosevelt just to see if it would work. Had some fresh with me just in case.
Let the line down to the bottom and up one crank on the reel handle....the familiar tap, tap, nibble, nibble of a kokanee was soon felt. That little bugger stole my corn and half the maggots before I even had a chance to hook him! OK re-bait and try again; same result. Wow have I aged that much in a year? Nope just had to get the hang of it again. I was soon slamming them as in days of last year. Brother in law was soon catching them too. Nephew Mike wasn't doing so well. I finally asked to see his set up...oh boy not so good. Had him take the set up off my spare rod and put it on....now he was catching fish too.
What a hoot holler great time we had with kokanee flying around, jumping, running into the boat and lights. Night fishing kokanee is a BLAST!! We finished up the two day possession limit of 20 fish each for a total of 60 in the cooler splashing in iced water; gotta keep em very cold to have great fish to fillet. It's now two AM certainly time to get home and off to bed for some sleep. Another great trip to Loon and fish to clean after breakfast in the morning.
Tight lines - Alan
