My brother in law called late Friday afternoon and asked if I wanted to go night fishing at Loon with him and my nephew Mike. Sure why not; my boat or Mike's? Decided to take Mikes so there was some fiddle faddle while we got everything together for the first night fish trip of the summer. Got to the "spot" on the south end of the lake by Granite Point and anchored down in 32' of water. Two floating lights on each side of the boat and the gas lantern fired up before it got totally dark. Baited up with anise/krill corn I used two weeks before at Roosevelt just to see if it would work. Had some fresh with me just in case.

Let the line down to the bottom and up one crank on the reel handle....the familiar tap, tap, nibble, nibble of a kokanee was soon felt. That little bugger stole my corn and half the maggots before I even had a chance to hook him! OK re-bait and try again; same result. Wow have I aged that much in a year? Nope just had to get the hang of it again. I was soon slamming them as in days of last year. Brother in law was soon catching them too. Nephew Mike wasn't doing so well. I finally asked to see his set up...oh boy not so good. Had him take the set up off my spare rod and put it on....now he was catching fish too.

What a hoot holler great time we had with kokanee flying around, jumping, running into the boat and lights. Night fishing kokanee is a BLAST!! We finished up the two day possession limit of 20 fish each for a total of 60 in the cooler splashing in iced water; gotta keep em very cold to have great fish to fillet. It's now two AM certainly time to get home and off to bed for some sleep. Another great trip to Loon and fish to clean after breakfast in the morning.

Tight lines - Alan

Dang those all look like decent sized fish. I haven't fished there in two years....had kinda given up because the fish were so small. Looks like they have grow pretty nice. What would you say the average length is this year?
Might be time to load up my jigging rods again and head up there. Got hooked on Roosevelt, and hadn't planned on fishing loon this year, but if the fish are decent I might.

surfj9009 - The fish this year are running just under 10" to just under 12". They are really fat and nice for Loon. I too have fallen in love with the kokes at Roosevelt but the night fishing at Loon is a hoot and not as much work as driving down to Roosevelt. Besides you don't have to get up at o dark 30......just go to bed at o dark 3 am!

Hey Alan, looks like a nice haul there. I would have sent some fruit your way with Dawg but, when he suggested it would easier to meet in the afternoon on his return, you missed out. Sorry. I'm glad you guys did well on Rosie too!

Thanks for the response. I haven't been there night fishing for a few years, but maybe I'll head up there for a little bit. It is a heck of a lot of fun, that's for sure. Now that summer classes have started again, I'll be having to stay local for the most part. Still gonna try for some more Roosevelt hogs but Loon is far more accessible. Thankfully( I have a convertible top with side curtains now too, so a propane heater should help keep the misses warm too, so I could be Loon for me.
I've got an old Blue/grey Lund Tyee with a white Johnson on the back. If y'all see me out there say hi!

surfj9009 - I have an old white StarCraft Holliday with an Evinrude E-Tec on it. Stop by and say hi if you see me too. I won't be out there this weekend; family camp out time.
