I was introduced to bass fishing about a month ago by my friend Quadfather. Up til now we had just gone out on Bitter lake. I have been wanting to get into lake Union for a while since I live just a few blocks away, but it had been closed all spring. I wanted to submit a review because so many people write reviews on the canal areas, but I couldn't find much on the Eastlake side of the lake.

Chris came over at about 3ish, we geared up jumped in the lake at Terry Pettis park (Fairview and Newton). We finned our way south towards the restaurants and found some great old docks to fish under. I tried a senko with no luck, a Rapala floater, a shad rap...nothing. Threw on a tube bait with a football hook, danced a little bit and bam!! Pulled up my first smallie ever! It wasn't anything to write home about, just over a pounder, but it was a fun fight, twice the stamina of the lmb I had caught a week ago, and it was great to actually get a fish on the line. Chris also landed a small one here. Things went quiet so we moved further south.

The next dock over had a small ship they were working on, and a crane was moving heavy items back and forth overhead. I had seen this from a ways away, but when we headed over it appeared that they were done for the day. The dock nearby looked really fishy, so I went floating over to fish it. Next thing I know, the crane is moving again and there is a huge bucket of cargo swinging overhead. I was a dead duck if he dropped it. I started into a strong backpedal and watched the cab of the crane to get eye contact with the operator if possible, but he wasn't watching the water, he was watching the ship that was over yonder. I got out of there safely and without incident. Still, just be aware of your surroundings in this area, and assume that no one sees you down in the water, especially on a bright day.

We moved further down the lake and each caught another smallie. This time I caught the little guy and Chris caught a bigger one. It really wasn't a very productive day, but we did find some good looking areas that I will be exploring in the next few weeks, and it was a great day to be on the lake all in all :)

Thanks for the report. You guys float tubing? I've been thinking about trying that on Union...lots of boat traffic to contend with.

Yes, float tubing. Sorry, this is my first report, I am sure there are lots of things I didn't think to add.

If you keep along the shore, which is where the bass are anyway, then you are very much out of the path of boats. We never came within 100 feet of another watercraft.
