Accompanied by my father today, we took my niece and nephew into Milk Lake. It was a great day. The bite was tremendous today, and it was great to see my my niece and nephew enjoying catching fish. We all limited out within a few hours. This is a beautiful lake, and due to it's limited driving access, it remains clean. NO TRASH. ANYWHERE. Unlike other lakes that are easy access, people respect this spot enough to clean up after themselves (which should be a given).
At 5500 feet in elevation the weather wasn't too bad with the system that is moving through. Temperatures were in the low sixties, with scattered clouds and sunshine -- we left when some very dark clouds started moving in.
The trip in is fun and does require four wheel drive. In fact, we hiked the last half mile because of a washout which we were afraid might cause a bit of body damage to our vehicles. We didn't see another person today, other than our family!
I won't lie, the brookies we caught today weren't huge. They ranged 8-10 inches, but will taste great breaded and fried in the skillet. Half of a night crawler on a size 6-8 hook, with a power egg above the worm killed them. It didn't seem to matter on the color of the egg, as we used pink, green, white, etc. The egg seemed to attract them as it helps with buoyancy and scent. Other than that, a small slip sinker above the weight and about 18 inches of leader.
