Headed up to Lake McMurray in search of Rainbow Trout. First time fishing this lake, but did my research on northwestfishingreports.com. Launched at the WDFW site at the Southern end of the lake, just after 9:00 AM. Gravel launch with a fairly shallow entry so had to back into the water a considerable amount to float the boat (17' Aluminum v-hull). Probably wouldn't try this launch without 4-wheel drive. Parking was plentiful, with only 3 other trailers at the launch.
Water was calm, with light wind and little chop. Worked our way South to North on the Eastern side of the lake, trolling Mack's Double D and Dick Nite Dodgers. Terminal gear was Mack's wedding ring spinners in pink, and homemade spinners in various combinations of red, purple, pink, gold, silver, tipped with PowerBait. Within 15 minutes, had our first strike with the fish stripping off a considerable amount of line. Nice fighter. Buddy was a bit eager to put the fish in the boat, and over tightened his drag and snapped the leader. Lesson learned.
Over the next few hours, we caught and released a 8 Rainbow and 1 Coastal Cutthroat. All hit the lures aggressively, and were active fighters. Several with multiple jumps, making for some exciting action. Fish were in the 10-14 inch range with good girth. Brought in 2 that had parasites. One was pretty sorry looking. Wind picked up a bit as the day progressed, but not bad. Lake traffic was minimal, and was very nice to not be battling for space with water skiers and jet skis!
