This report is a little late, but it covers our fishing for Baker lake sockeye from August 14 through 16th.
Sunday morning my cousin and I got up at 3:00 am and hit the road so that we could be fishing before sunrise. We launched at Horseshoe Cove and started fishing before the sun came up. I had read reports of fish being caught just south-west of Maple Grove campground, so we tried all over that area without much luck. A couple of hours went by with no bites so we decided to join the flotilla up in the Noisy Creek area. Over the next couple of hours we saw a handful of fish boated, but didn't get any bites ourselves. Around 2:00 we went to get our camp setup, ate and then headed back out to see if the fish would bite at sunset. They didn't.
Monday we were up at 4:00 and on the water before 5:00 (sunrise was just after 6:00.) We decided to fish the Noisy Creek area again, assuming that we had missed the fish there the morning before. We spent the morning and early afternoon trying depths from 20-120 feet (seeing fish all over the water column), and running various dodger/flasher and lure/scent combinations. Again we saw a handful of fish caught, but not a single bite on our lines. In the evening we decided to try something different...floating around the lake on pool lounges and drinking beer.
Tuesday was similar to the first two days. The boats that we did see catching fish were using the smallest version of the pink mini-hoochies and what looked like 6"-8" chrome flashers. Every time we spoke to someone they told us that they had caught fish at a different depth, which seemed to match what we were seeing on the fish finder. At one point we tried to chase down a sockeye that had broken someone's leader and was dragging a flasher around as it swam. Every time we would get close the fish would make a run for it and due to the amount of boats in the area we gave up the chase.
Overall it was a beautiful weekend on the lake, however we didn't get a single bite in three days of hard fishing. I gave it a 2 because some people were catching fish, although I got the impression that they were regulars to the fishery and probably put in a good amount of time for those fish.
