With the temps dropping, decided to see if the trout would bite on the troll yet. Arrived about 8am, only 1 other boat bass fishing on the lake. Started off with a size 6 green Doc Spratley on the downrigger, and a size 6 Carey Special on the other line. Downrigger started at 20 feet, the other line had 1 1/2 ounces of lead so it was between 15-20 feet. Trolled the trench from the launch north to the point. Had 1 takedown on the downrigger line that didn't stick. Fish seemed to be holding between 15-25 feet, so I was in the zone. Nothing then for quite some time. Started changing out flies and sizes. Still nothing. Then I trolled over to the west side of the lake and started marking fish right at the bottom. Most in areas I know do not typically hold smallmouth, so figured the majority must be trout. I had switched the downrigger line out to a size 4 olive woolley bugger. Maybe 30 seconds after dropping the downrigger to about 4 feet from bottom, fish on! Nice fat trout, got it right to the kayak, and it hops off. Damn. Then in succession I landed 2 12-13 in smallmouth. Released both. Then got a real nice takedown on the downrigger, fish made a couple of jumps, and it looked and felt like a 20 inch or so fish. One aerial display too many though, and it got off. Then I landed a decent 15 in rainbow on the other line, I had also switched it out to a size 4 woolley bugger. Then a call from the wife, and I had to pack up and head home. Fishing wasn't fast and furious, but once I found where they were holding and biting, action was enough to keep my interest. Probably would have got a few more if I didn't need to leave.
The temp drop seems to be turning them on a bit. Fish were holding right at bottom in 29-30 feet of water. If I got in 28 or 31 feet of water, the screen went barren. Very narrow lane I found them holding in. They wanted big and gaudy on the fly too.
Video shows the rainbow and bass I landed, plus the 2 aggravating get-offs.
