Whoo-hoo! The Lund got wet today. In thinking back, the boat and I haven’t been out since we fished salmon on Lake Washington back in September. Anyway my daughter’s boyfriend is getting ready to ship out and won’t be back until April. Being from Texas he had never fished in Washington State so when Saturday morning rolled around with a few unaccounted hours I had a plan. The boat and I headed to Campbell Lake and I had them meet me there. On arrival I was questioning my decision as the wind was blowing foam across the launch area. In that I have a screw loose I launched anyway and waited for the kids to arrive. And waited and waited, it turned out that they were headed for the marina launch in Oak Harbor (maybe my fault, earlier in the week we had talked about fishing and crabbing out of Oak Harbor but…).

They found their way to Campbell Lake and shortly after they arrived we were underway. The first order of business was finding a place to fish in the lee of the swirling winds. A bit of a challenge but out of the worst of it we got to fishing. With the shifting wind I decided to run only two rigs, one long line with no weight and a lead line set-up. I was running a 60’ 8# fluorocarbon top shots on both rods with a 1 ½” silver or silver and gold Rapala stick bait type lure. The surface rod was running at 45-60 pulls and the lead line rig at about ½ of a color. It seemed that the silver/lead line combo had the edge but both saw action. Our trolling speed was 1.4 mph and the water temperature was around 46 degrees.

In the end we were out a few hours and put 6 fish 15 - 19+” in the net. All the fish were released unharmed and feisty. We also lost 4 or 5 fish and had a number of drive-bys. All in all we had a blast, sharing many stories and laughs. The boy from Texas is hooked and is already asking what we can catch in April when he returns from deployment.

reas: Nice job on the fishin. Please give a big thank you to your daughters boyfriend. I made three11 month deployments to Vietnam back in the 60's up until 1972. I can relate to what he's doing. We lived in Sedro Wooley area in the 70's for about 12 years and I normally fished Pass, but I did fish Campbell a couple times. I think Campbell is better fishing now than it was back in the 70's. I think you and I have the same model of boat. Mine is a 1650 black Lund Renegade. Bought it new back in 2011. It has treated me real well. I'm headed up to fly fish Cady tomorrow. Fishing has been good there for me this year. Fun times. Then over to Lake Roosevelt next month depending on the weather. Tight lines to you. Thanks for the report.

Went out Saturday and had a quick limit and empty live-well. Went back to the ramp and asked a few of the shore fishermen if they wanted to come out. Got a great guy, Fred. Lives in an old bread delivery truck and on Social Security. we went back out and put 5 in the live-well for him to clean up and be able to eat. Great Stories and instant friendship. Hope to meet up with him again soon. We were pulling moonglow half flash's with Black Whooley buggers at 1.7mph from the ramp to the highway and back.
