Hit Hog Canyon today with my boy. Fishing conditions were rough due to the sub 20 degree weather topped off with high winds. Talked to a number of people on the ice. No one had had a bite so I guess I was fortunate to ice a coupe of 3 inch perch. In all my years of ice fishing this lake I have never done so badly or caught something other than trout. There were a lot of perch down there this year sitting on the bottom. I saw only two last season with my under water camera. I am a bit concerned about the future of this winter fishery as well as Fish trap down stream. I am starting to wonder if the winter trout lakes were stocked very well for this winter seasons. The fish are bigger but seem very scarce. Over all I accomplished my goal of spending some outdoor time with my boy so the the day was not a waste of time.

I was there a few weeks ago with no luck at all-not even a bite from 0730-1430! There were several other guys on the ice, and there was only one bite between all of us! That is pretty bizarre about the Perch--I have fished this lake quite a bit as well, but have never caught Perch--I have heard of catfish caught though pre-ice over.

That's a disappointment! Would you recommend moving towards Fourth of July Lake? Also, are you strictly jigging or are you using tip ups? This will be my first time coming out that way and am looking for a few tips as far as bait and what methods you are using. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I think Hog Canyon and Fourth of July lakes have been fished out pretty quickly this year. I think Fish and Game have significantly reduced plants the last few years. Budget cuts most likely. It is a shame our license fees goes into a general fund and is not used for specifically for fish a game programs. Anyway, these lakes are usually good for limits the first couple of months after opening and then go dead. You might try up north at Waitts, Hatch, or Williams. I like to use jigs like Swedish pimples or North Land buck shot rattles. I would also suggest a portable fish finder. The trout are often suspended in the water column and travel in schools so the action will be real hot for a few minutes then drop off. I often catch trout in 40 ft of water and the fish can be at 10 ft or as deep as 30 ft for example. In this part of the country I have never seen tip ups used. the max number of poles or lines in the water is two, provided you have a two pole endorsement. Good luck.
