Hadn't been fishing since my honeymoon on the Oregon coast a month ago - where I managed to slay a few fat surf perch before the storms got too strong.

I've had the itch for a while, so I figure why not give one of the year round lakes a few blocks from our new house a try?

Late afternoon on Sunday and the weather was thickly overcast, the water on Lake Desire was flat and glass-like. All lake vegetation was dormant, you could see bare spindly skeletons of the trees that bank the north end of the lake. The cloud cover was high and cast a dreary dead-like calm.

Standing on the end of the short dock at the WDFW launch I carried on just to grasp the tiniest opportunity to fish...anywhere.

No fish. nary a sign, no risers...nothing. No bites either. I tried power eggs off the bottom and also tossed around a silver kastmaster.

It was fun to get out though.
