I and nine other guys went out on a chartered tuna trip with Capt. Don aboard the Ranger out of Westport. We set out Monday night August 6th for the six hour cruise to the fishing grounds. Tuesday morning everyone on board was up bright and early to get fishing. And fish we did. We absolutely killed them!! The longest period of time we went with out fish was two hours. We would troll around looking for schools of tuna and once we found them we would mooch live anchovies until the school of tuna either moved on, got spooked, fished out or they were out of our drift. We fished until dark on Tuesday then we were back at it first light Wednesday morning. Wednesday was a total success too! We caught tuna until Capt. Don said it was time to head back to shore. My last tuna of the day was also the biggest fish brought aboard the Ranger that trip. A stellar 26lb 15oz beast. Most tuna caught were between ten and 20 pounds.
Total tally for the trip: 160 tuna in the boat, I earned $55 for landing the biggest tuna on the boat (friendly fisherman's wager), missed the top Westport tuna derby fish by one ounce and got to take home a cooler stuffed with tuna, about 150 pounds of filleted tuna.
