Went out to Jefferson Head on Thursday hoping to catch a few coho. I had my Dad with me. He steered the boat while I worked the downriggers. It's a good combination. Fog was filthy thick, so you had to have GPS or you didn't know which way was up. Flat ware though. Start over by the white house with no luck. Headed a little South and around 7:00am the action started. Problem was it was the wrong type of fish. All Balckmouth between 3 and 6 pounds. Caught and released 9 in total. Many were wild, but since I was just using pliers at the side of the boat I didn't catch all the markings.

I have never had such hot action on any type of salmon before. Once one fish was reeled in and the rigger re-set, the next would go off. We also lost at least a couple before the boat, and one huge one that we never saw. Broke the leader between the flasher and spoon. That was my fault, as I didn't have heavy enough leader, but I figured we were only going to see Coho. The King must have been huge almost spooled me on a 8.5 foot downrigger rod with 20 pound test. Could not move this fish. Dad wasn't familiar with the boat so he couldn't get it turned fast enough to give chase.

Was using an army truck coyote spoon, and a green hoochie, both had herring teasers. Using green silver 11 flashers.

Tons of bait in the area the bait balls were huge, and as soon as you hit one it was fish on. Should look for Blackmouth fishing in a few months. No one else was out there, but the fog was so thick I wouldn't have even know.

I am very new to salmon fishing and would appreciate any advice on how to catch these resident and fall coho. Everytime I go out I only seem to catch blackmouth. I was trolling fast 3 to 3.5 mph. Plus I was high up - 50 feet.

I would appreciate any advice, and I will share what I know which isn't much. We maybe had a lucky day.
