Ive been taking my small whitewater kayak on the saltwater. My whole boat is only 8 ft long so using my 7 foot salmon rod is not practical. So armed with my ultra light set up (4'11'' ugly stik) I targeted searun cutties. Once on the water I realized the large chum run was in. I mean tens of thousands of fish must be in and around the inlet and narrows right now. It didn't take me long to give up the cutthroat and target the chums they were jumping everywhere. There was a great tide rip set up and many fish on the surface near it. Using a gold spoon (Pot of Gold from Rainbow Plastics) I cast across the rip. It wasn't long before I had hooked one of those Chums. I was enjoying a great fight before I realized I hadn't re-set the drag for salmon fishing my reel was smokin I tried to tighten it but it was too late snap 100 + ft of 6 lbs line a my spoon was gone. I had been spooled that has never happen to me before. Let me tell you I wont let that happen again any time soon.
May all your lines be tight and the fish all hogs.
