Fished from about 10:00am to 1:00pm at Scatchet Head on Possession (slack tide was at 10:45ish). It's easier to fish away from the crowds at the green buoy by radiating out on the bar, using the buoy and the cabins on the beach near the entrance to Cultus Bay as the perimeter markers. It is between 40 and 70 feet deep, or so, for almost a mile due south of Scatchet. It has numerous rocky patches below that hold lings, cabezon, and some very large rockfish. My friend caught one here last year that was 39" and over 26 lbs. I've fished a lot of areas for lings, and this one is the best producer and easiest to fish.
Lots of people like to say they use live bait. Sounds glamorous. While you're catching your flounders, I will outfish you with jigs and be on my way back to port. Jigs are the easiest and most efficient way to catch lings, rockfish and cabezon in most areas (off jetties, a banana weight and whole herring on a mooching leader will get you less snags, and when you have to get deep fast, like at Deception, this same set-up using sinker release and cannonball weights can be advantageous).
At Possession 3-4 oz to the occasional 6 oz jighead is what works. You don't need to use the large scampi style, except on the 6 oz. For the 3-4 oz., use six inch rubber worms in black, red, brown - almost any color. Put on a little scent. Constantly re-find the bottom, crank up 1-6 cranks, set in poleholder and let waves jig for you. It doesn't take much action to draw strikes. They bit like crazy Sat, 5/23. My brother and I kept two lings and a nice cabezon.

Thanks for that report...great detail. I was on the west side of Hat doing the same thing....Saturday. Wish I would have ran over to your side.
