Went out early the morning of the third of July for a shot at some resident coho in the northern part of MA 10. Made a short run across calm water and lines were in by the time the sun was peeking over the Cascades. For the first part of the morning I fished around the Kingston ferry and I was seeing bait on the surface but none of my offerings could coax anythign into hitting. By 6:30 I ran down to Jefferson Head, trolled around there for a bit, no luck. Started trolling back north to the ferry terminal, and at 7:30am I got a 6-7 lb hatchery blackmouth boatside right in front of the Kingston Ferry in 140 feet of water. A little early, so I had to flip the hook and let it go. No other hits, fished until 8:15am then called it quits to go get some breakfast in.
Fished my standard gear, chartreuse flasher ahead of a Coho Killer, touched up with some smelly jelly. I tried it out on a new knucklebuster setup I just picked up... a single action reel on a 10' rod makes fishing a lot more fun....
Other than that, crabbing was decent/good in Marine Area 9 for me at the start of the season (July 1-4th). If the sunstars kept outta the pots, I was finding some decent keepers, including some 7+ inchers. Standard bait worked great: Ling/salmon carcasses and chicken all produced.
