Sorry this is a couple of days late. Fished the Des Moines salmon derby on Saturday. I gotta say it was interesting! We launched at Redondo as the sky was turning pink, what a site, it's been a while since I've seen that. Got a little shaker right off the bat. Next my buddy jerry gets a hit. He sets the hook and it feels like nothing, then his rod starts jumping, then nothing, back and forth. WTF? Finally gets his stuff up and sees that he hooked a flounder, and a school of dog fish are tearing it up! I wish I had my camera with me so I could show you guy's this chewed up flounder, it was a mess. About 15 minutes later Jerry's line pops off the rigger and he thinks he hooked into something big. Well, it was something special. He hooked a crab pot in 120' of water that had a 30' line on it! I ended up pulling his line in by hand till I could pull up the rope. I kept it it since it wasn't marked and had obviously been out there a long time, and I deserved it. Kind of makes up for the ones I've had stolen over the years.
After a couple more shakers we moved over too Pt. Defiance where I picked up my first pink of the year. About 3lbs. That ended up being our only salmon of the day to take home. I never did go to the weigh in, in fact I haven't even checked the site to see what the winning fish was. I think I'll do that when I'm done here. I only saw one king all day. A guy had a 10lbr at the launch.
Like I said at the beginning, an interesting day on the water. Tight lines to all.
