After yesterday’s trip to the Hollow fighting 5’ waves and managing 7 fish in 4 hours, this morning’s calm sunny weather was a welcome change.
I took out a friend of mine who is also a WALakes.com member (“fetchitup7”, aka Matt) to the Hollow with lines in the water by about 6:20 am. We started at the north end of the Hollow where we picked up 1 pink followed by a slow spell. By about 7:30 we were near the shipwreck when my pole went off. I fought and safely released unharmed, a wild king Matt estimated at between 14 to 16 pounds. A short time later Matt did the same thing safely releasing unharmed, a very nice wild king almost as big. From there we had a double resulting in one of the two pinks landed, and 5 more pinks netted by about 8:30 am. During this time we also lost 2 other pinks at the boat. The final 2 pinks to complete both of our limits came at 9:00 am when both rods went off at the same time and both were successfully landed. Most everyone around us was also catching fish on a consistent basis. Matt, I hope I got my times right in this report. NOTE: 3 including the king I released were caught on a pink coho killer, the rest including the king Matt released were caught on a pink mini squid. 30 feet to start and after the sun came up we caught the majority of our fish at 65 to 70 feet. All but 1 caught near the shipwreck.
While on the water Matt and I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with the very kind Mike Carey. Mike had 6 in the boat at that time and while he trolled (we had just limited and were done fishing) I paralleled his boat and we had a nice visit. The fishing was fantastic and we were honored to meet, visit with, and thank Mike Carey for all that he does for all of us here on WALakes.com. What a great guy! Thanks again Mike. I look forward to seeing you out on the water again soon.
I will be out there for round 3 tomorrow morning. 5 from yesterday are in the smoker as I write, and today’s catch was food savered up and put in the freezer for future enjoyment. Last night’s BBQ’ed fillet was absolutely great. I will have another tonight. I hope everyone who was out there today caught their limits.
