The Bayside Marine Blackmouth Derby took place this weekend. The fishing was above average but the weather was "iffy" at best. On Saturday we tried to fish Posession Bar, but with 4 or 5 foot chop it was not fishable for us. We moved over to the Skunk Bay area near Point No Point to escape the winds. We picked up 2 keepers there, one weighing 10 lbs. 5 oz., the other 8 lbs. 11 oz. We caught them both on a green glow flasher and coyote spoon set up. We had 2 other fish on of keeper size that got away.
On Sunday, the winds came down a bit so we were able to fish Posession. We could only fish until 10:30 a.m., but we did pick up 3 keepers ranging from 7 lbs. 7 oz. to about 5 lbs. All 3 were caught on coyote spoons, either green glow or funky chicken. For some reason our hoochies and plugs did not fish as well.
I don't have the exact numbers, but I heard there were 197 anglers in the derby with about 65 fish weighed with an average weight of 7 1/2 lbs. The winner was a fish weighing just over 15 lbs. and was reportedly caught on the southside of Hat Island.
