WALakes.com member Pradeep and I fished the Bubble this morning, with lines in the water by about 6:30 am. At 8:00 am one of the rods went off and the biggest salmon my boat has ever witnessed was peeling line from my Penn reel without pause. After about 10 minutes getting nowhere with this amazingly strong fish, I put the boat in gear in an attempt to regain some line and catch up to the fish. Unfortunately before we could gain any ground on this salmon, it broke off and was gone. The reel was actually hot to the touch. Based on my experience, I would guess that this was a King salmon in the 30+ pound range. My line main was 25 pound test and leader was 30 pound test. What an amazing battle and Pradeep’s first fight with a salmon. He talked about it the remainder of the morning and couldn’t wipe the smile off of his face. What a great experience! Because there was a minus 2.7 low tide scheduled for 11:00 am, we decided to play it safe and be back at the Everett Launch before then in order to remove my boat before the low tide effected the launch. We were off of the water by 10:45. As usual the Bubble fishery is very hit and miss and is often a first light fishery as well. At the time of the take down we were in 175 feet of water, presentation at 90 feet. The fish took a white hoochie, 42 inches behind a green Hot Spot dodger. We ran the same dodger and a green hoochie on the other rod. Watching my buddy play his first salmon, especially one that big, made the trip for me. Several other fishermen watched the fight unfold and seemed enthused by the event even though we didn’t land the fish.

I use 30 pound Maxima main line. Behind a flasher I use 40 pound Maxima Fluro Carbon. Behind a Hot Spot or similar flasher, the fish can put a lot of pull on the flasher when the flasher gets sideways. The fluro carbon has low visibility so why not. I've never had problems with broken line, and my biggest was 42, another one 39 and prob 8-9 in the 30's at various places. I use Shimano 200G reels in my boat. Those reels are pretty cheap, 65-70 bucks but they hold a lot of line, have smooth drags and I've never had the drag heat up or hang up. I have 5 of them, couple of them are 10-15 years old.
