A friend and I camped Friday/Saturday at Salt Creek Park (amazing campground!). We were hoping to get a crack at some halibut fishing sometime during the weekend. We put my 15-foot skiff in Freshwater Bay Friday afternoon. Unfortunately the Strait was in a lousy mood; even large vessels would have gotten tossed around in the main channel. So after dinking around in protected waters for 30 minutes we came back in.
Saturday was a different story. We fished from 1:00 pm to 6:30 pm. The Straight had a pleasant demeanor allowing us to easily enter the main channel. Not wanting to venture too far from sheltered waters we headed just slightly west of Freshwater Bay and started fishing at about 120 feet. We fished systematically deeper, until around 3 pm at about 300 feet, my fishing buddy hooked and landed a chicken halibut drifting a hose herring on a spreader bar.
We saw no more action for the rest of the day. However, it was a great trip! Anytime you can safely land a halibut on the Strait in a 15-foot boat, it is a good day!
