Made it to Tokeland around 8:00AM armed with a days worth of wages in sand shrimp. The perch fishing was ok with 9 keepers caught between two of us in about a 3 hour stretch,casting off the beach.
The hard part is having the patience to wait for a hard strike and not set the hook on those pesky little bait stealing bullheads. Make sure and take hooks big enough that they can't get them in their mouths and elastic thread to keep them from picking it apart. You'll need to check your bait often for crabs stealing it also. I found that by putting the lead 3 feet below a three way swivel and a short dropper to the bait, it keeps it up a bit off the bottom and helps with both the bullheads (sculpin?) and the crabs. Surf perch in the pan, life's good. God Bless.

If you don't mind I would like to pick your brain a little... I am new at surf fishing and have not had any luck yet. I read stuff on the internet and try what they suggest but no luck. Where in Tokeland were you? I have been surf fishing around Grayland and off jetty in Westport a few times. Nothing. I have been using clam necks, shrimp work better? Elastic thread? Is that just wrapped around the bait? Do you have a pic of this bait setup? My usual setup is a 12foot uglystick, Cabelas salt real, 15#, triple swivel with about 3foot to lead and 1 foot leader to 1/0 hook and a clam neck. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Will you be there this weekend? I would enjoy hooking up some fish with you and learning what I am doing wrong. Thanks

My buddy that lives next door to me perch fishes at Ocean Shores all the time. He loves it. he uses chest waders. You also need a pretty small hook. There are also certain conditions that you need to have. Something about how the water is reacting in the surf or something. He has said that he has to drive down the beach sometimes for a few miles to find the correct conditions. He nails the hell out of those things. Going to try it one of these days. But to busy lately with the halibut and chinook fishing.
