Painful day in area 10.... all day, 10 hours.
Launched about 0630. We spent the whole day going back and forth outside of the cans in front of Shilshole marina. There was a fair amount of boats all doing the same thing. Early in the morning it was kind of cool that we were following groups of birds, and we found ourselves surrounded by a complete patch of boiling water, full of baitfish. I had never seen anything like that. But.... no hits in that area.
We fished typical pink gear (Humpy kit), and other assorted pink stuff off downriggers. The pink gear was fished in the upper 60' of the collum. No hits.... We fished splatter back green hootchies behind Pro troll Green flashers at deeper depth. 80-130'...... no hits. Coyote spoons gave us some shakers.
We saw a few jumping fish that I suspect were pinks. We saw 3-4 fish caught all day.
Had 3 shakers, and actually a rockfish took my trolled gear.
So the kicker of the day was that near the end of the day I had the only hook up to a real fish.
I was bringing the fish in towards the boat, my buddy was bringing his line in at the same time.
He hollered to me to hold up a little....so he could get his gear in. In my lack of experience with large fish like salmon... I didn't keep tension on the line, and the fish had a slack line for just a moment. He did a big head shake on the surface right in front of us, smiled and swam off!!
It appeared to be a King about 10-12 lbs.
( I guess I won't do that again)
