This report is for two days-- Sunday (March 18) and Monday (March 19). I fished for about two and a half hours both days (due to really early or really late incoming tides) on the South Jetty. Black rockfish continued to bite pretty good!
On Sunday my buddy and I got one a piece, including the coolest black rockfish I have ever seen (picture one). Note the bite out of his tale and torn fin. It was also the fattest black rockfish I have ever handled. It was probably the second biggest black rockfish I ever caught, but might have been the heaviest! I also caught and released my first red Irish lord; small, but very cool looking fish!
On Monday I was at the jetty by 6:30 AM (when Westhaven State Park opens) because the tide changed at 5:06 and I had to head home early. I caught three (picture two), and missed twice as many bites. I have never seen black rockfish be peckish; they usually whomp the jig-- but two of the three were nibblers, as were the missed bites. I would have downsized jigs if I wasn't hoping for a big ling!
All fish were caught on 5-8 inch grubs of various colors.
