Got an invite to go halibut fishing and shrimping. Tried getting on the water on Friday, but the water in area 6 was too rough for our 20' boat, so after a couple of drifts over the shelf we were targeting south of Smith Island, we fought our way back to port. Saturday was much nicer. Dropped shrimp pots by 8:30a and fished all day drifting over various areas in 40'-80' of water. Tried jigs, herring on a spreader bar, and trolling herring. Nothing paid out. Maybe one good hit on a jig, but nothing to prove it. Only recovered 2 of the 4 shrimp pots we dropped. The other two seemed to grow legs and walk away. Even stayed out until 7pm to catch the slack current in hopes of them just needing calmer water for the floats to rise. No luck. total haul of spot shrimp from the other two pots was 57. Not a productive day on the water. Very nice weather though and good company. Total fish caught: One star fish (with clam attached), one sculpin, one bull kelp, 57 spot shrimp, and 3 scallops. Quite a few boats out on the water. Didn't see anything being caught, but saw some remnants back at the dock of a few smaller halibut and some good sized lings.
