Met up with Gort (Byron) and headed out of Shilshole about 0715. Dropped 4 pots off of the Carkeek park area, in mostly 80' ish of water. Seems the pot line gets farther N. from Shilshole every year. After that I promised myself I'd spend some time figuring out salmon trolling.
We trolled Green splatter back hootchies and some tinsel looking thing. (forget the name) You salmon people would know it. This was behind Green Pro troll electro chip dodger. Worked water that was anywhere from 175' to 400' depth. Mostly ran the riggers at 60-110-. Pretty quick into it I had a fish on that did not come out of the clip, but made itself well know with bouncing. 12lb balls and quite aways back, I think it was more than the sometimes 12-14" shaker, but obviously nothing to substantial, still staying in the clip. when I pop out of the clip, I may not have got my line to full tension quick enough for those barbless hooks. Fish gone.
Gort had one hard take down out of the clip. I am sure was a fish, as I keep the line pretty tight in the clip, and we never foul released all day.
By 11:30 it was 9 dungies, no salmon, a few flounder. In comparison to other years, this year I saw a TON of sub legal femailes. I'm talking 3". Few males, but we managed shy of 2 limits by 1 crab. On that note.... never found the last Crab Pot...... I'm guessing it would have had the 10th one in it for sure. One one pull up we had 19 crabs!
If you find a pot out there off Carkeek. It's Chris Andersen info. on the float of course!
