7/23/2012 8:51:00 PMDon't use too much floatation, you don't want your traps to come off the bottom and float away with the tide. Best thing you can do is use a longer rope.

7/23/2012 9:02:00 PMWow! that is pretty deep. I've always wondered about stepping out beyond the typical 100' of line that most people purchase. Don't know if the crabs run back to shallow water at the 100' depth mark. But there is a whole lot of territory out past 80' that no one puts pots at.

7/23/2012 9:09:00 PMI had a lot of line on, I had 230' on pots set at 130 and 140. I don't think more would help. I think it was just a matter of the force of the water flow against the amount of flotation when it payed out to the end. The weight held and the float is going under. i did think about how much weight I need to hold a pot with a float (or floats) that would stay up against the tide.

7/24/2012 9:26:00 PMuse long rope but becarful where you put your floats. let pot hit bottom, give it an extra 7ft, clip on first float, throw out another 15ft the clip on float. throw out another 15ft, with a double float at that end, helps let you know what direction to pick up the pot from and helps keep line away from prop : ) WATCH your first two sets of floats, if they go down to current keep adding floats, or extra tag lines at 20ft a section. any line left over i tag to itself and at the end of the loop I clip a small wieght to keep spare line off surface. Note this is a proven method, not needed for shallow depths. use in high current , or deep areas. Ive found big male crab in deep depths of up to 270 ft.
