Wife takes a bonus day off, following the holiday on Monday. Say's, lets go Salmon fishing!. Not willing to dispute that idea. We proceed to walk to the nearest store selling fishing licenses. Next morning, I am wondering if we are gong fishing? Wife keeps sleeping and sleeping. About 7:30am, she gets up and asks if the Salmon are still biting. Don't know, let's go find out!

We launch at Shilshole around 9:00am. Start her with a hot spot flasher with green splatter squid, attached to her Lamiglass rod. She ask's where her pink pole is? That is your trout rod, dear. This is your big girl pole.....Oh she say's! (it has been awhile since here last Salmon trip). Other rod with a hot spot and white hootchie combo.

While I was parking she got the lowdown from other successful fishermen at the ramp. Deploying her gear, I say how deep do you want to fish? She replies 70ft, based on the Intel she had freshly acquired. I moved my gear every 10 minutes between 30 and 70. After about 10 minutes of trolling, we passed through some dirty water. loaded with floating salad. I instruct her that the gear needed reeling in, cleaning, and deploying. She thought that was a load of crap........LOL! So we do that another 8 times over the next half hour or so. She was not real excited about her decision to go Salmon fishing at this point.

Each time her gear was deployed, the same question was asked.......how deep would you like your gear.....dear? This particular time it was 76ft! Very exacting, after looking at the fish finder. Finally some clean water for a while. When the wife say's, and I quote. "My pole is doing something funny!" I take a peek, and say "indeed, your pole is doing something funny! Cause you have a fish! She travels from the open bow area to the rear of the boat, where her rod is right quick! Starts reeling and asks, what do I do? Keep reeling and do not stop!. The drag on her Penn level wind was set just right. So, instead of constant instructions including "keep your tip up, and "reel, reel reel" and "keep more tension". I thought non stop reeling and me shutting up would be better served. She kept the rod loaded very nicely. The fish jumped several times. Which, I thought had gotten off each time the fish entered the water. But could see her rod told another story.

Because the reeling never stopped. The Salmon would get closer to us when it was in mid-air. Too funny!. Fish in the net, she is not wanting to go in. It is approaching 1pm, and she is still not willing to give up, even after several more encounters of the salad kind. That is about the time she say's " your pole is doing something funny!". Indeed, my rod had a small fish of 2 pounds on it. Which she expertly netted for me, this time.

Being so late in the day, it reluctantly went into the cooler. Not wanting to risk burning her out on the first trip of the season. Asking a few more times if she was ready to go in, she reluctantly caved around 1:30 in the pm.

She is excited to go again. And I can hardly wait to hear "Your pole is doing something funny". That just make me smile!

Dang!! Da motaboat got on some salmon!! That's totally cool that your wife caught herself a salmon. Considering all the times we've gone out for various fishing, and been skunked! I hope she gets into it more with ya.
