Area 5 Sekiu Sept 18 and 19, 2012

The F24 Xperience with Glen and Cami at Sekiu, Washington is always an experience for those involved but this time it was the extreme experience for me.

The good catching reports had me in great anticipation for my long drive to Sekiu.
We started off in the boat, leaving Olson’s both mornings around 6:15am and heading north, kinda. I was not paying a lot of attention. I was down on the downriggers 35-80 feet in 400-500 plus feet of water when I asked how deep the water was.
I got my limit both days. The first day I hooked a big one and saw it flop on the top of the water letting the hook go.
There were four of us each day so our limit was 8. The first day we let Coho go (nice fish to me) in hopes of a bigger one. We ended day 1 with 7. We did get a nice fish around 10-12 pounds.
First day my fish were caught on Wannafish A Lure Zebra Mojo, Pink Splatter Squiddy Thing (salmon size), and a green prototype I will call Shamrock Mojo. The second day the boat limited. I could not catch a fish on anything but Zebra Mojo. Glen was using a Zebra, also.
We ended the salmon catching with a double on the second day. Great way to end. We may have has another double which is part of my extreme experience.
On the second day, after getting our limit, we searched for awhile for bottom fish for me. We didn’t get any. We did get to see a whale! This is the closest I have ever seen a whale before. Years ago I saw killer whales out in Commencement Bay, long distance. This baby whale was searching the kelp beds and came over by the boat.
Now the extreme experience I had with F24 the first day! I was using the double Dick Nite Pink Splatter Dodgers with the salmon size Wannafish A Lure Pink Splatter Squiddy Thing, this is where I think we had our first double, my fish was landed, in the net and then George also had hooked one and was in need of the net. I reach down to unhook the, live and conscious, fish. I use a two hook set up, 2/0 trailer then a bead then 3/0 top hook. The top hook was in the fish and ...the trailer went through my forefinger. I screamed! Seeing it, sticking out the other side, I had flash backs of when I was a kid and my uncle trying to get the hook out of my finger, then others, then the fire department. We ended up at the emergency room and they cut it out. Apparently, I guess I was screaming at Cami to do something. The fish was wiggling around jerking my finger with it. I was thinking about her cutting the hook off and she is saying “what do you want me to do?” I look down at the thing sticking out of my finger. I know George needs the net. I think “I am going to have to do it myself.” So I reached out and pulled it out with my left hand. I thought “wow that was easy.” I can’t remember who got the net free of the fish. I was bleeding all over. I do believe we got Georges fish in. Thank God for barbless hooks. Cami gave me a couple of antibacterial wipes while she dug around for the first aid kit. She doctored it up and gave me a glove to put on and I was back to catching fish.
I had an awesome time. My finger barely hurts. After that we bonked the fish before reaching down to unhook it.
It will be close to the 1st of Oct. before we can experience Sekiu 2012 F24 Xperience. Stay tuned.

Yep, bonk it first and always use pliers to unhook fish. I use a loop and snap to attatch leaders to the flasher that way I can free the line and get the rod secured before trying to unhook the fish.

Way to tough it out! Times like that are when you appreciate the barbless hook rule.

Another great report powered by F24! And the girl (formerly) with the salmon girlscout sash avatar :-) Looks like a very busy cleaning station too. On a sidenote- make sure you are up to date on tetanus booster just in case (once every ten years I believe) even if that hooks look like it was new/clean. Looks like you earned a fishing warrior merit badge while out there persevering! Funny how pain can fade a bit when getting right back in action (just make sure you are OK first!).

Toni!! You are one of the greats on this website. Such a great photo of the FINGER. Sorry to hear about your ouwy. But you tell a great story. Always enjoy your adventures, hope to see you on the water one day.

Thanks everyone. It was a great time. My finger is doing great and there is only mild tenderness. After I pulled it out I wondered what did I fuss about. I am thankful for the barbless hook. But it went far enough though that it could have been pinched any way.
