My buddy and his son, 18, my two oldest boys, 9 and 10, and myself headed out of the Armeni Launch bright and early to cruise on over to West Point to compete in the coho derby.
After finally realizing why we kept snapping leaders (fluorocarbon mainline instead of leader material! Huge difference) we finally have been boating more fish. We had to work hard for it today putting in twelve hours with four poles on two downriggers but it paid off. Five fish by the end of the day with each of us landing one. Snapped one off on my buddy's old line before replacing it quickly at sea and other than that, didn't lose anymore fish. Smallest was about 5 lbs and the largest weighing in it almost 12. Threw a few small ones back in as well to get bigger for next time.
Trolling all around the green can and to the east and south short distances we worked water from 100' out to water around 600' deep and fished from 40' down to 150'. Hitting fish at different depths on nothing but e chip flashers either followed by superbaits or pline hoochies with scent on 30" leaders. Fish came in spurts throughout the day. Morning bite was slow to come on as it was a bit overcast but did get three of the five before noon and the last two around 3 o'clock. We also run echip flashers off of our downrigger balls. The more noise you make the better I believe for silvers.
Was a great day to be out on the water. Super calm waters for the most part. First Salmon for my boys and the best day we have had in the salt this year as we begin to figure it all out.
